Glimpse of the first IATF audits

Transition audits are based on the new IATF 16949: 2016 standard for a while now. Knowing the fact that companies must upgrade before the end of June 2018, we are now looking at the main nonconformities identified by third party auditors.

What are the main non-compliances detected during transition audits?

  • Risk and opportunity analysis: missing, incomplete or not tracked
  • Process reviews: not correctly defined in the management system or not done
  • Management review: incomplete due to the above points
  • Method to identify the stakeholders relevance
  • Management of alternative modes
  • Supplier management with a risk approach
  • Misunderstanding of organizational knowledge management
  • Internal auditor competency: few auditors sometimes even the QMS Manager (!) - have been trained to the IATF standard
  • Planning changes in the company
  • Role and responsibilities of process owners: unknown by the owners themselves
  • Establishing and taking into consideration the customer specific requirements in the quality management system
  • Requalification audits: the frequency and content are not mentioned in the monitoring plan

According to the last IATF conference in Oberursel, Germany, on September 13, 2017 the 10 most important non-conformities are the followings:

  1. Internal auditor competency
  2. TPM (Total productive maintenance)
  3. Contingency Plans
  4. Non conformity and corrective action
  5. Risk analysis
  6. Problem solving
  7. Customer specific requirements
  8. Control of production and service provision
  9. Product safety
  10. Management review input – supplemental

It seems that auditor qualification is the main non-compliance, followed by the requirement to implement TPM programs.
